This is why the handoff between Capture and Create should not be treated as a simple file transfer. Before modeling begins, teams need agreement on scope, coverage, accuracy requirements, file formats, model standards, and the intended use of the final deliverable. 

Create turns captured data into the right deliverable 

A point cloud is a detailed record of visible conditions, but it is not automatically a BIM model, drawing set, or coordination resource. Create specialists interpret the captured data and convert the relevant information into an organized deliverable. 

Through 3D modeling and 2D documentation, teams can receive as-built models, floor plans, elevations, sections, design models, coordination models, fabrication documentation, or handover records, depending on the agreed project scope.

Modeling teams need clear instructions about disciplines, elements, tolerances, attributes, and level of development so the result is detailed enough for its intended use without adding unnecessary complexity. 

A connected workflow improves the handoff 

When Capture and Create are planned separately, modeling teams may discover missing coverage, unclear control information, or differences between the requested scope and the available data. Those gaps can lead to additional questions, processing, or return visits. 

A connected approach begins with the desired Create output. Capture specialists can then plan coverage and collection around the areas, geometry, and level of detail the modeling team will need. The Create team can review the inputs early, identify potential gaps, and apply the agreed project standards during model or drawing production. 

A practical workflow includes six steps: 

  1. Define the decision and required deliverable.  
  1. Establish the modeling scope, standards, and level of detail.  
  1. Plan the capture method and required coverage.  
  1. Process and review the captured information.  
  1. Develop the model, drawings, or other digital output.

Start with what the output needs to accomplish 

The strongest results come when project teams define the Create requirement before field capture begins. They should identify who will use the deliverable, which decisions it must support, what conditions need to be represented, and how the information may be maintained or updated.
