AI + humans: Why embracing technology is the key to staying relevant in construction

At Procore Groundbreak, where Hexagon Building Solutions featured its Capture > Create > Analyze solutions, a theme resonated across sessions and conversations: AI will not replace most people in certain jobs, but it will almost certainly replace people who don’t embrace the technology and use AI to do their work more efficiently.

This idea isn’t just provocative; it’s practical. In construction, where precision, speed, and collaboration are critical, AI is rapidly becoming a tool that enhances human capability rather than replacing it.

Recently, we sat down with Valerie Ashe, Senior Account Executive at Hexagon, who attended Groundbreak, and asked for her perspective on this human-in-the-loop model.

“AI is a tool, right? It’s a human-trained artificial intelligence that should be a supplement to the jobs we do every day,” said Valerie. “In construction, there are all kinds of AI tools coming out to help professionals do their jobs better.”

From manual tracking to smart analysis

Traditionally, construction teams rely on spreadsheets, site walks, and manual inspections to track progress and identify issues. Today, reality capture tools like those offered by Hexagon and Multivista are transforming that process.

“Most larger construction projects have adopted reality capture technology,” Valerie explained. “Or if they can’t, they’re using services like ours to avoid being on the job site every day. It cuts travel costs and makes the project more efficient.”

These tools don’t just collect data. They also analyze it. AI can now compare visual data to models, flag discrepancies, and accelerate reporting timelines.

“Without AI, tracking discrepancies could take weeks or even months. Now, AI can catch issues in the field much faster than a human manually reviewing data,” she said. “It’s making VDC managers and project managers’ jobs much easier.”

Humans in the loop are still essential

Despite AI’s growing capabilities, Valerie emphasized that human oversight remains critical.

“We’re still a long way off from not having a human in the loop,” she said. “Our VDC specialists are quality-checking the AI to ensure the reporting we deliver is actionable and accurate.”

This partnership between human expertise and AI efficiency is what makes the technology truly powerful and safe for mission-critical projects like hospitals, data centers, and pharmaceutical facilities.

AI in everyday life and construction

Valerie also drew a parallel between her personal use of AI and its role in construction.

“I use AI to help me generate detailed trip plans, like my family’s upcoming road trip to Mount Rushmore. It helps me plot out which EV charging stations will be available and in working condition, recommends hotels and sights that we can all enjoy, and even reminded me that some of the national parks may not be open due to the government shutdown. The overall trip was still my idea, but AI takes hours off the planning process,” she said. “Same in construction. It’s about speeding up the work, enriching it; not replacing the worker.”

At Groundbreak, according to Valerie—and Procore’s own recap of the event, one oft-referenced talking point among attendees and during presentations belonged to Todd Wynne’s, Chief Innovation Officer at Rogers-O’Brien: “Anything dull, dirty, or dangerous is something that AI can help support.”

Takeaway for Hexagon’s customers

AI doesn’t have to be a threat. It can be a great opportunity. For construction professionals willing to embrace it, AI offers a way to work smarter, faster, and with greater precision. As Valerie put it:

“It can only make people’s jobs better, not necessarily eliminate them, but evolve the landscape of how we work.”
